Build a digital library: magazine archives and catalog collections on one page

One flipbook fits on a page. Twenty issues of a magazine, a catalog per season and a few brochures do not, and a list of titles hides the very thing that makes people open a publication: its cover. A library page shows the covers, opens each one as a flipbook on click, and stays light because nothing loads until a reader picks a book.

Here is a small library made of plain lightbox covers. Click any of them:

Shelf or grid

The Bookshelf addon gives you both:

  • A shelf. Covers stand on wood, metal or glass shelves. Cover size decides how many fit a row, and a new shelf is added below when one is full. It feels like a newsstand, which suits magazines and children’s books.
  • A grid. No shelf graphics, just covers evenly spaced. It suits catalogs, reports and minimal site designs.

Shelf image, background color, cover size, margins, alignment and cover shadow are settings, so the library can match the rest of the site without custom CSS. You can try all four styles live on the addon page.

Setting it up

If the flipbooks don’t exist yet, turn your PDFs into flipbooks first.

  1. Give every flipbook a cover. Under Edit Flipbook, open the Lightbox tab and set the cover image. The first page of the PDF works, but a cover made for the shelf reads better at small sizes.
  2. Create a shelf. Go to Real3D Flipbook, then Shelves, and add a new one. Choose its style and sizes.
  3. Add the flipbooks to the shelf in the order you want them shown.
  4. Embed it with the shelf’s shortcode or the WordPress block on any page.

Each cover opens its flipbook in a lightbox over the page, so readers browse the library and the issue without leaving it. The embedding guide explains why lightbox is the right mode for pages with many publications.

Covers that work at shelf size

Covers on a shelf are shown at 150 to 250 pixels wide. What looks fine on a printed cover can turn into noise at that size.

  • One large title. The magazine name or the catalog season should be readable without zooming.
  • Distinct images. Twelve issues with similar photos look like one book twelve times. Vary color and image from issue to issue.
  • Same proportions. Mixed cover sizes make an uneven row. Export all covers at the same aspect ratio, ideally the page size of the publication.

Organising a big archive

A single shelf with fifty issues becomes a wall. Split it:

  • By year for magazines and newsletters: one shelf per year, newest first.
  • By type for companies: catalogs, brochures, reports, manuals.
  • By language for international editions, with right-to-left editions on their own shelf.

Put the newest or most important publication above the shelves as an inline flipbook, so the page opens with something to read, and let the shelves below hold the rest.

Keeping it fast

A library page with forty covers loads forty cover images and no flipbooks, because each book only starts when it is opened. Keep the cover images small (a few hundred pixels wide is plenty) and the page stays quick. For long archives of large PDFs, the loading speed checklist covers the rest.
